Tactacam 5.0 Camera and Scope Adapter (FTS)

Introducing the Tactacam 5.0 camera and the Tactacam through Scope Adapter. Both the camera and the adapter can be purchased together or separately. In this review we will look at these two products bought separately.

The Tactacam camera can be purchased in two versions, one being the standard 5.0 camera and the other the newer 5.0 wide camera. The former is ONLY compatible with the Tactacam Scope Adapter covered in this review and stated by Tactacam on their website, see link below.

Tactacam Camera 5.0

The camera ships in a study box with foam padding to secure the camera, accessories include a USB charging cable and documentation, no charger is included as the camera cab be charged using a laptop or other compatible USB changing device (see Tactacam support for details)

The camera itself is very well constructed and a compact design, the coating has a soft rubber textured feel and the controls are all nicely integrated into the camera housing. The connections for charging are hidden in the base of the camera, which can be accessed by removing the cap on the camera base after following the camera base cap unlock instructions in the camera documentation.

The camera lens is protected in a sealed lens housing and the entire camera once the base cap is in the locked position is weather proof.

The camera can be operated by a control unit on the camera for on-off and recording mode selection.

To power on the camera the user presses the power button once and the camera is power up and the controls are illuminated, at this point the camera will being recording and the power button light will flash to indicate recording mode active, to stop recording the user can press once the power button the toggle recording on/off after each operation the camera will vibrate to indicate selection made (this vibration can be disabled in the camera smartphone app)

The camera recording mode button allows the operator to toggle the camera recording modes, again this can be performed in the Tactacam smartphone app.

The camera controls also have the camera battery level indicated located for easy of view when operating the camera.

Connection to the Tactacam smartphone app is accomplished with holding down the camera mode button until the camera wifi mode is engaged and a flashing blue light appears in the control unit area below the battery level indicator.

The operator can the connect his or her smartphone to the camera wifi and launch the Tactacam app to being operating the camera remotely (see Tactacam documentation for more details)

Battery Charging, Memory Card Slot

After removing the base cap of the camera you has access to the USB charging port, battery and Micro SD memory card slot. The base cap also contains information about the camera recording modes for quick reference, these are also covered in more detail in the cameras documentation.

Charging the Tactacam camera if easy via a suitable USB source, such as a laptop or other compatible USB charger (check Tactascam documentation before using any third-party-charger)

The camera is charged with the battery in-place or the battery can be removed and charged separately with a dedicated battery charging device from Tactacam.

The camera accepts a Micro SD memory card and Tactacam suggest using a specific type of memory card for fast writes to deliver the best performance from the Tactacam camera when running under higher resolutions such as 4K recording.

Camera controls are positioned on the top of the camera based on correct orientation when recording. The controls are on/off and cycling of different recording modes. The camera has a multi-coloured light positioned close to the controls to indicate the current recoding modes using a three colour status. The different colours correspond to the different modes.

Camera Recording Modes

The camera supports three recording modes, Normal (4K), Zoomed and Slow Motion. These modes are toggled when the mode button is pressed in quick succession, toggling through the modes. The modes can also be selected when the Tactacam is paired with a mobile device via the Tactacam smartphone app.

Tactacam (FTS) Scope Adapter

The Tactacam Scope adapter unit is the housing that will fit on mode modern rifle scopes and comes with a number of adapter rings to allow users to find the correct fit for their rifle scope.

The scope adapter itself has a compact housing with black anodized metal case covered in part with a rubber feeling textured covering. The housing feels durable, but because It contains a lot of glassware to reflect the incoming light from the scope image 180 degrees to the Tactacam camera, so care must be taken to keep this unit clean and safe from knocks and falls.

Fitting the scope adapter is fairly straight forward once you have identified the correct adapter scope ring for your scope and have become accustom to fitting process.

Tactcam documentation guides you through the process, but you might need to practice a few times so when you’re out in the field you can quickly fit the scope adapter. Obviously you can simply leave the adapter on your scope if you chose too.

Once the scope adapter is fitted you can insert the Tactacam camera. One thing I noticed during this step is the need to correctly orientate the camera so the recorded footage is correctly aligned, one way I found was to ensure the camera control unit was facing directly upwards in relation to rifle scope, otherwise your recording footage from the scope will be misaligned.

I would like to see Tactacam fit some kind of locking lug between the camera and the scope adapter to ensure correct alignment and then the user only needs to align the scope adapter when fitting to the rifle scope.

Another way you can check correct alignment is to use the fitted camera view from your smartphone once everything is fitted to the rifle and make adjustments accordingly.

Overall the Tactacam camera and FTS scope adapter is a great product for those shooters wishing to capture live shooting footage from the shooters eye view through the rifle scope.
